THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE PINK

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, accounting for approximately one third of cancers affecting women.

Every year, more than 2 million women worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer, including more than 60,000 women in France. In France alone, more than 12,000 women die from the disease each year.

Today, the five-year survival rate is 88%, and nearly 9 out of 10 women recover from breast cancer. But survival is only part of the story. Treatments can have significant and long-lasting side effects, including fatigue, nausea and joint pain, affecting the quality of life of thousands of women. More than 30,000 breast cancer patients every year experience a deterioration in their quality of life linked to the chronic toxicity of treatments.

SUPPORTING RESEARCH AT GUSTAVE ROUSSY

The Gustave Roussy Institute is France and Europe’s leading cancer centre and brings together some of the world’s leading expertise and innovations in oncology. Its ambition is to improve cancer cure rates over the coming years, combining patient care with clinical and translational research.

For Pink October 2026, Gustave Roussy is highlighting its “50 nuances de rose” research programme, which aims to make breast cancer treatment increasingly personalised.

The objective is clear: to avoid unnecessary treatments whenever possible, while giving each patient the treatment best suited to her individual risk of recurrence.

Researchers are working to identify each patient’s risk of recurrence from the moment of diagnosis, while also understanding the biological mechanisms behind treatment-related toxicities in order to better prevent them. This includes identifying biomarkers that could help doctors determine the right treatment and the right treatment duration for each patient.
